Bespoke 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos Cinema on the Wynyard Estate
Project Overview
As part of a new-build property on the Wynyard Estate, near Yarm, Inspire Audio Visual was commissioned to design and deliver a dedicated home cinema for a family who wanted a genuine big-screen movie experience within their new home.
Located in a purpose-built room above the garage, the cinema gave us the opportunity to consider the complete system from the design stage — from speaker and screen positions through to projection, lighting, control and the final room layout.
The result is a comfortable family cinema built around a 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos system, a 140-inch acoustically transparent projection screen and 4K projection.
Designed Before It Was Built
A high-performance cinema starts long before the equipment is installed.
We produced detailed drawings for the room, establishing the screen, projector and loudspeaker locations before construction progressed. This allowed the necessary cabling and infrastructure to be incorporated into the build and ensured each element of the cinema had a defined position.
Having the drawings, build photographs and completed room also gives a clear view of the process — taking the cinema from plans and an empty shell through to the finished space.

140" Acoustically Transparent Cinema Screen
At the front of the room is a substantial 140-inch acoustically transparent projection screen, paired with an Epson 4K projector.
Using an acoustically transparent screen allows the front loudspeakers to be positioned behind the image rather than around it. Dialogue and effects therefore originate from the screen itself while the technology remains hidden from view.
It also allowed us to create a much cleaner front wall, with the large projected image becoming the focus of the room.
7.2.4 Dolby Atmos Surround Sound
Audio was designed around a 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos configuration.
The system combines seven ear-level channels, two subwoofers and four overhead Atmos channels to create an immersive sound field throughout the seating area. We specified Definitive Technology loudspeakers and subwoofers, driven and processed by an Anthem AVR.
Careful positioning during the design stage was particularly important. Rather than treating the speakers as additions to a finished room, their locations were planned around the seating and room geometry from the outset.
A Cinema That Still Feels Like Home
Performance was important, but this wasn't intended to feel like a commercial screening room.
The family wanted somewhere they could genuinely spend time together, so the finished cinema combines dedicated cinema technology with a much softer residential interior.
A large sofa occupies the main seating position, with additional raised seating behind it, giving the room plenty of capacity without introducing rows of traditional cinema chairs.
Warm architectural lighting around the room and acoustic panels complements the neutral interior while helping create the darker, controlled environment required for projection.
The result is equally suited to a family film night or settling in for a major new release.
Simple Control with Control4
Despite everything happening behind the scenes, using the cinema needed to remain straightforward.
Control4 brings the room together into a simple interface, allowing the family to operate the cinema without having to think about the individual pieces of equipment involved.

The Finished Cinema
What began as drawings and an unfinished room above a garage is now a dedicated home cinema built specifically around the family and their home.
System highlights: 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos audio, 140" acoustically transparent screen, Epson 4K projection, Anthem AVR, Definitive Technology speakers and dual subwoofers, Control4 automation, integrated architectural lighting and tiered family seating.
For us, projects like this demonstrate why involving the cinema designer early matters. Speaker placement, sight lines, cabling, projection and control can all be considered as part of the room rather than compromised once construction is complete.
